JR LIVESTOCK DIVISION

SPECIAL RULES

1.

Due to limited facilities, each exhibitor will be allowed to enter a maximum of five large animals (including horse, sheep, swine, beef and goats), an a maximum of 5 small animals (poultry, waterfowl, rabbits)

2.

Market Animal Exhibitors: There is a limit of five (5) entries for Market Animals (Lambs, Steer, and Swine) per exhibitor and must fall within the area of the following examples.

Example

2 lambs, 2 swine, 1 steer

2 steers, 1 lamb, 2 swine

1 steer, 2 lambs, 2 swine OR

2 lambs, 1 swine, 2 steers

3.

Exhibitors in this division must be members in good standing of a 4-H club or FFA Chapter within the Navajo area. Enrolled members of Navajo Tribe from any residency may compete if they are bona fide members of a 4-H Club or FFA Chapter.

4.

All rabbits must be identified with a permanent, legible ear tattoo in the left ear.

5.

All animals entered must have been owned by the exhibitor for at least 90 days prior to the show date (purchased on or before July 13, 2001). Exhibitors may be asked to provide proof of ownership. Exhibitors who break this rule may be prevented from showing animals in the future. Exhibitors must be enrolled in the 4-H/FFA project exhibited during the current year. MUST BE ELIGIBLE BY EXHIBITOR'S COUNTY GUIDELINES.

6.

All swine exhibitors must be able to provide a veterinarian's blood test certificate or validated herd certificate to insure all animals are free of pseudorabies and brucellosis. All swine must have ear notches for identification. All swine entered must be a New Mexico Livestock Board Official Certificate of Swine Inspection (SI Form) and a Navajo Nation Hauling Permit.

7.

All market sheep, (not including breeding sheep), must be shown slick shorn, with not more than1/8 inch of wool. Ornamental wool such as boots and top knots will be allowed. Fine wool breeds should have a 3” patch of wool on the right shoulder for classification. Sheep will be veterinarian inspected for general issues.

8.

All steers must be branded for identification for proof of ownership.

9.

All Market Animals must have a Navajo Nation Hauling Permit, which can be obtained during regularly scheduled weigh-in days or at any Navajo Nation Ranger Station.

10.

Animals will be received on Wednesday, October 3, 2001, between 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. All entries must be postmarked or hand delivered to Shiprock Cooperative Extension Office by 5:00 p.m. with entry fees included on or before July 13, 2001. Checks or money orders only, no cash will be accepted. NO LATE ENTRIES, NO EXCEPTIONS!

All horses must have health certificates.

12.

Entry fees will be $4.00 each for horse or cattle; $3.00 each for sheep, goats, and swine; $2.00 each for rabbits and poultry. Entry fees are not refundable.

13.

Exhibitors must be present at time of judging.

14.

Where a sufficient number of animals are entered in one category, the lot may be broken into two or more sublots based on weight. This division will be at the discretion of the chairperson and their decision will be final.

15.

Each 4-H Club and FFA. member will be responsible for seeing that his or her animals are fed and watered each day and the area around each pen is kept clean. Clean up your shearing area. Proper maintenance of animals & pens counts toward Herdsmanship Awards.

16.

Check out of all animals will be done after pens are cleaned out; clean up your shearing area.

17.

All students are encouraged to dress appropriately. (No T-shirts and caps in the show ring).

18.

Gates will be locked at 8:00 p.m. nightly.

   

19.

If fitting, of an animal is done by an adult during the Fair, the Department Head may disqualify the entry. Instructional demonstrations may be done so long as the exhibitor is present and participating in the fitting. The Fair Officials recognize that an exhibitor may be in the show ring while parents are preparing the next class. Let it be understood that extreme discretion needs to be used in such cases.

SHOWMANSHIP & HERDSMAN AWARD

1.

An award will be given to the outstanding junior livestock show person of each species. Judging for this award will be done during the actual livestock classes.

2.

A Herdsmanship award will be presented to an individual of each age division (Novice, Junior & Senior) who takes the best care of their animals every day, keeps animals and pens in show condition all during the fair, feeds and waters the animals regularly, and shows a cooperative and helpful attitude with Fair Officials and fellow exhibitors.
